Open in order to create a new balance between the interests of innovators and the interests of the rest of humanity. This means to be ready to question the not so obvious relationship between (open) science and its (closed) applications. What is Open Science in a world of patents that limit access to the practical application of science? What is the meaning of Open Access if people are not free to use their knowledge the way they want? Without Open Science, the co-operation between scholars and the application of new knowledge may be slower and less effective. But Open Science without an "open" patent regime is bound to become meaningless - for being only partially open ultimately amounts to being closed. Open Science and Open Access need to advocate for "open" applications of science, in order to avoid being naive and/or a hypocrite defense of hidden interests. Without open applications of science, Open Science and Open Access resemble the 6th Circle of Dante's Inferno, where gluttons are condemned to ‘freely’ see delicious things that they cannot in fact enjoy.
