Lesson Plan

Introduction

This is the introductory lesson for this unit of science.  I would begin by reading the book "Rosie Revere Engineer".  It is about a little girl who creates new things out of old things, to solve problems.  I will then tell them they will be inventors and engineers!  They are going to think of a problem in their life (at home or school or in the car) and invent a solution.

Guided Practice/ Monitoring

This part takes time.  They need to brain storm and think of a problem that they have in their life.  They can choose to work alone or with a partner. After they think of the problem, they draw a picture of  the problem on page 1 of their packet.  Then they will think of a solution and draw it on page 2 of their packet.

Assessment

They will build a model of their invention with Play-Doh to share with their fellow classmates.
Finally, we will end the lesson with watching and discussing the video on Kid Inventors.  See the link above.

Future lessons

The rest of this unit involves actually building the inventions.  We will gather supplies from home and go to Menards and Hobby Lobby on a field trip to purchase other necessary supplies.  After building the inventions, the students will try them out at home and then finish the final page of the packet.  Did it work?  Lastly, we will share the inventions with other classes and parents.
